If you go down in the woods today, you’re sure of a big surprise
If you go down in the woods today, you’d better go in disguise
For every bear that ever there was
Will gather there for certain because
Today’s the day the teddy bears have their picnic
Black bears are active in the Adirondacks this time of year as they leave hibernation.
While the mountains are home to over half of the State’s black bear population, the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) says that encounters are not common.
Still, the DEC is urging New Yorkers to make sure their properties are organized so as not to attract bears.
In a recent release, the DEC encourages folks to take down bird feeders, store garbage within “secure buildings” until collection and keep pet food inside.
There are around 4,000 black bears in the Adirondacks. In fact, the DEC deems most of upstate New York as “bear country.”
